Agility Obstacles

Each obstacle in agility presents its own challenge. Gage and his person Jim Carretta show us how it's done. To view a larger image, click on the thumbnail photo.

Contact obstacles: The challenge with contact obstacles is to make sure the dog places at least one toe in the yellow target zone at the bottom before jumping off the equipment. In the excitement of competition, our big dogs can easily walk right over the target zone.

Tunnels: With the big dogs, the trick to the tunnel is to duck! Tunnels seem to be a favorite obstacle for many dogs.

Jumps: Different organizations require different heights. The lowest you can jump a Leo in competition is 20 inches; the highest is 26 inches.

Weave Poles: They fall into a category of their own. Weave poles are probably the hardest obstacle to learn for any dogs. Wiggling back and forth between a series of poles makes very little sense! (unless you're a Border Collie...)

Pause Table: The pause table is a 3 foot by 3 foot platform set at varying heights (depending on the size of the dog). The dog jumps up on the table, lies down, and stays for five seconds before continuing with the course (a welcome breather for the handler!). The challenge for Leos is fitting comfortably on the table.
